Hi chris, despite looking slightly more 3D, is still something that puzzles me and it is the light source. anytime you paint a character you want to see the details it has, so you put a light source slightly frontal. in this picture and the previous one the light source is set to the side of the figure, provoking big patches of shadow, and slightly hiding some detail.
