Sketches: Characters turnarounds

Apologies to my team for this taking so long, had a few rather problematic technical issues to deal with (computer died!) thus a lot of work to try and swat up on. Lesson learned, keep a back up always! Here are the character turn arounds:
  • Scientists Assistant

  • Scientist

  • General

  • Soldier

Sketches: General Turnarounds Edit

Today I have edited the The turnaround for the general, because when I was given the turnaround (first image) it was very messy so I cleaned it up on GIMP and it looks decent enough to use for a modeling template.
Look at the differnces between the first image and the second image and leave a feedback if it does look useable.

Support Sketches: Character Orthographic- Generic Characters

In order, to go according to the new plan, we were asked to produce the rest of the turnarounds for the generic characters. Here they are the turnarounds with a close-up of the face design to create the model of the head.
To complete these characters, clothes were added, in these designs, a research of 1950s clothes was needed and can be seen here. Where I used old designs, added with a twist of retro-futurism.

Generic Female Turnaround

Generic Male Turnaround

Also i though it was needed to tweak slightly the Scientist's Assistant face, so I can start modeling the head.

What is needed now is only to get these designs modeled something that I will start tomorrow.

Sketches: General Turnaround

So here's the situation. We need to get these characters modelled, and we have now divided up the modeling tasks. All we need are the turnarounds, so to further speed things along I have done a turnaround for the general. Based on Chris's sketches. So now Shahbir can start to model the general.

Oh, by the way Shahbir, if you feel you need to print this out and re trace the lines a bit more clearly, then by all means, do so. As it is still only a rough sketch. Just remember to blog it. And if your not sure of anything, we will all be in tomorrow anyway, so we can talk then.

That's it for now.

Oh and one last thing. I changed the top part of the body so that you can see a tie. If you wish to alter that, or make it more like the last drawing of the general (by Chris) then thats fine. I only changed it because I wanted to see a tie for some reason!

Sketches: The Soldier - Final Design

Here is the final design for the Solders that is to be duplicated and used within the trailer. As you can see, they consist of a heavy build, with futuristic body armour which reflects the design of the tanks and reflects the enviroment. Below is the same design as it was originally, except with shoe laces, which was later decided by the Art director to be a flaw in the characters placement.

To get this design I used influence from different Science fiction classics ranging from the 1950's to Star Wars. I applied aspects of real life Solders from different eras, keeping in mind how someone of the 1950's would perceive a futuristic soldier to look. Here are some more of the sketches showing how I came up with the final design of the soldier.

Support Sketches: Character Orthographic Views Development

A few days ago Ruben emailed me three of the character orthographs, the spaceman, the scientist and the scientists assistant.

The Spaceman

The Scientist

The Scientists Assistant

They looked more or less fine, however I felt that there were just a few small adjustments to make before modeling them. The only reason for me being picky is that I know that the 3D models won't be that different from the orthographs, which means that if there is any mistake, it will still be there in 3D.

The main concern was in the side view of the spaceman. The top half of his body armour was looking too thin. I too was having trouble with the side view when I was doing the first designs several weeks back, but I kind of wanted the proportions of Buzz Lightyear.

Basically the helmet in our spaceman is supposed to be stuck all around the neck of the suit and not squished inwards, to where the neck of the guy in the suit is. Anyway we all agreed that the side view needed to be adjusted, so I had another go at sketching the side view.

I started with just a generic figure.

Then drawing the space suit over the top. It still wasn't looking quite right.

I had a few more attempts...

...and I think I got roughly what I was looking for in the last drawing (far right).
Although the angle of the picture is slightly off, I think this is the best so far. I made a few other adjustments. His legs are straighter and he is leaning forward slightly to counter balance the canisters on his back. I just need to draw it a bit neater now.

While I was in a drawing sort of mood I went ahead and had a go at drawing the scientist. There isn't really anything wrong with the original. The only difference when I drew it was that I drew on the skeleton. The only way that helps is that I know exactly where the legs joint to the body, but I'll probably just stick with the original anyway.

Now the assistant. Again, there wasn't much to adjust, but I thought that the legs were going too straight up. Something about the pose looked kind of awkward. I could be wrong, but maybe second opinion? So I angled them going inwards a bit. Also in the side view, I straightened the back a bit as well.

I'm still not quite sure about the assistant. If anyone else (not just studio members) can give some feedback on the drawings, it would be much appreciated.

Sketches: The General - Designs and Final Sketch

Here is the final design for the General in "The Day of the Invisible Cannibals from Beyond the Stars". It is a mixture of difficulties that I came to confront when designing him, which although took longer than neccesary has hopefully provided the film with memorable characters. This General is a mixture of classic general designs, gaining influence from historical resources entwined with the imaginitive spark of the science fiction films past and present. To keep modelling simple, and due to the simplistic nature of appearances in the 1950's I tried not to over do the Generals design. Here he is!

To gain this design I took the old sketches I created when trying to understand the Generals appearance and character, then kept on refining them using different source images available online. Using the trusty eye of my team mates I was encouraged to pay close attention to the detail used on the character to ensure he delivers his intentional presence correctly. This will also help with the turn arounds, which makes life far more easier when modelling. The General is also bears some comparison to the newly refined solder design.

Using a website entitled "posemaniacs.com" I took several different poses from a selection of digital models and merged them together in photoshop to create the right pose for my General. I tweaked the pose using a lightbox when I wasnt satisfied with it to produce the final skeleton for my General design.

Sketches: The Generals Mustache

Here we have the General but with the prefered mostache picked out by Ruben. Ive done it so that you can see what he looks like with a large mostache and a smaller one.

Larger mostache (using prefered mostache style)

Smaller mostache (using prefered design)

Sketches: Soldier W/ Hat and Sunglasses

I have re made the Soldier with a large helmet styled like the helmets used by the Beefeater Gaurds in London. I have then attempted to try visualising what the Soldier would look like with Sunglasses, as it is common to find soldiers wearing these in modern times. In the 1950's, perhaps this would have been a very futuristic effect. Here we have the images below:

Sketches: Soldier Rough Sketch

Here is the first rough sketch of the Soldier to be used in the trailer, which is a design collaborated between the group. However, even though this has a slight feel of "Dr Who", it still doesnt fit into the time of the films enviroment properly.

Sketches: The General - Rough Sketches

I have sketched out the General roughly on a page so that we can get a variety of faces which we could possibly use for this characters design. I then took it to Ruben to get some artistic direction, thus me bullet pointing the key points to ensure I design the most efficient General for the trailer.

Here is the first "detailed" sketch of the Generals design closer to his final apperance.

Here is a more detailed, human like version of this head with a slight change of shape to make him appear more serious and authoritive.
